LIFE 220 - Fundamentals of Ecology (GT-SC2)

Interrelationships among organisms and their environments.

Student Outcomes:

At the end of the course, the student should be able to:

  • Describe in general terms the concepts of ecology and ecosystem science and how these relate to other sciences.
  • Define "system" and understand what attributes are required for a system to be a system.
  • Locate and describe boundaries of ecosystems of different scales in space. 
  • Identify and describe factors that separate one ecosystem from another across landscapes.
  • Discuss the major physical factors that determine the geographic locations of biomes.
  • Explain why those ecosystems exist where they do.
  • Apply these outcomes to student's life experiences

Prerequisite

Three credits of 100-level biology or HORT 100 (Horticultural Science); three credits of 100-level mathematics; Credit allowed for only one of the following: LAND 220, LIFE 220, LIFE 320, SOCR 220

Originally from Olney, Illinois, Dr. Miller attended Purdue University from 1982 to 1986 and received a B.S. degree in agronomy. He began his working career at Walt Disney World, The Land at EPCOT Center, in 1986 as a greenhouse intern. Returning to college after working for a time, he received his M.S. degree in agronomy from Texas A&M University in 1989. He then relocated from Texas to California where he was employed by a crop protection company. Returning to school again after several years, he studied weed science at Colorado State University and received his doctorate in 1998. Dr. Miller has taught online Biology and Botany classes for the Colorado Community Colleges Online (CCCO), and currently offers “Weed Management and Control” as well as “Elements of Ecology” courses through Colorado State University.
