Join us this spring for a special "hybrid" edition of LEAP 580A4: Museum Management, a course that examines the breadth and depth of what museums do by exploring their history and some of the critical issues they face today, considering what excellence means in a 21st-century museum. Through March, students will participate in the class asynchronously. During April, there will be a two-week window in which the non-residential students will join local students in Fort Collins to be immersed in the Gregory Allicar Museum of Art and its holdings on the CSU campus. For onsite timing in Fort Collins, we’re currently aiming at April 11-21 (with final dates TBD). Students will focus on their work in class while also intersecting with students and events in the hybrid version of LEAP 660: Community Engagement in the Arts. Students will also be able to engage with places and cultural events in the greater Northern Colorado region.
Throughout the class, students will develop an understanding of ways in which museums engage with accessibility, authorship, authenticity, diversity, engagement, ethics, interpretation, identity, stewardship, and storytelling, and the ways in which these elements are administered. Readings will include historiography, theory, and contemporary news articles, enhanced by lectures by and discussions with guest museum professionals.
NOTE: This hybrid course is designed to allow students to participate in both Museum Management and the hybrid version of Community Engagement (LEAP 660, sections 701/402). It’s an opportunity to participate deeply with a lived experience across the community and to see how a range of skills can fully integrate.
