Associate Professor of Systems Engineering
Dr. Steve Conrad has conducted research and consulted with the water and energy industry for over 25 years on the feedbacks between human-environmental systems through the coupling of social and engineering sciences to inform decision making and visualization, the quantification and modelling of system function, system optimization and resilience, and policy and planning.
Assistant Professor of Systems Engineering
Dr. Erika Gallegos’ research is centered on integrating humans with complex systems to enhance safety and performance in the design and evaluation of new and existing infrastructure.
Dr. Gallegos’ work focuses on modeling human behavior and cognitive workload over time to evaluate the interactions between humans and machines, with an emphasis on developing appropriate trust and maintaining situational awareness of human operators with autonomous systems. Her research is primarily applied to the transportation domain; with a current focus of integrating smart technology (e.g., connected vehicles, connected infrastructure, autonomous vehicles) into the transportation system while facilitating safety for all users (e.g., automated, non-automated, motorized, non-motorized).
Her education and research backgrounds are in civil engineering, industrial and systems engineering, transportation engineering, and human factors.
Associate Professor of Systems Engineering
Dr. Marie Vans was at HP Labs from 2000-2021, and was a senior research scientist at HP Labs in Fort Collins, CO. As of August 2021, she is the author of more than 55 publications and 35 U.S. granted patents.
Marie’s industry and academic experience include developing virtual reality simulations for education, product introduction, and analytics associated with educational experiences in VR. In addition, she has done research in natural language processing, document understanding & analytics, image analytics as well as security printing, information science, automatic 3D printer part defect detection, and bio-analytics. She is the co-author of a new book, “Functional Applications of Text Analytics Systems” with Steven Simske (River Series in Document Engineering) 2021.
Marie is also an adjunct faculty member of the San José State University, School of Information where she teaches a course in the design of educational experiences using social virtual reality platforms. She is a member of the Society for Imaging Science & Technology (IS&T) and the Global Standards Organization (GS1).
