PH 314 - Introduction to Modern Physics

  • 4 credits
Relativity; quantum mechanics; atomic structure; applications to solid-state, nuclear, and elementary particle physics.

After successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Identify and discuss the implications of key developments in Physics since 1900 in connection with the special theory of relativity, the structure of matter, and wave-particle duality.
  2. Describe the basic principles of special and general relativity and quantum mechanics.
  3. Solve quantitative problems in special relativity and elementary quantum mechanics.
  4. Demonstrate reasoning and critical thinking in applying principles of relativity and quantum mechanics to address questions in atomic, nuclear, and particle physics and cosmology.
