Exploration of the function of food consumption patterns and specific food components (nutrients and phytochemicals) and their role in the promotion of health and the prevention of chronic disease. Focus on the health benefits of the Mediterranean diet and its specific constituents consumed in Italy. Evaluation of effects of individual food components to provide health benefits through critical review and examination of scientific studies.
